How to Draw a Easy Candy Cane
You won't believe how easy it is to draw a candy cane.
This is just one of the many holiday drawing tutorials that I have for you on this blog. You can read the instructions and watch the video tutorials to draw a Christmas tree, a cartoon Thanksgiving turkey or a scary or silly Halloween Jack-o-lantern drawing.
For now, let's get back to the candy cane. The great thing is that the steps are easy enough for anyone to follow along with.

I get commissions for purchases made through some of the links in this post. There is no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure here.
I use Inkscape and my method is simple because I use basic shapes, that you already know, to draw each section.
Watch the video above to see how the shapes come together to make the candy cane.
Use the video to help you practice. The more you watch (and do the steps too!), the better you'll get.
I've also added a red bow svg file that you can download for free. Scroll down to the bottom of the post to get it.
The bow is a medium skill level design. So I have made things easier for you if you're a beginner by just giving it to you.
Download it and import it into Inkscape. Add it to your finished candy cane.
Here is what you'll need to draw the candy cane.
Drawing Supplies
Digital Drawing Supplies
- Inkscape software program
- Computer
- Graphic tablet (optional)
I like to use Inkscape to make my easy cartoon drawings. Inkscape is an open-source graphic software. Which means it's free to use. Sometimes, I use drawing apps if I'm working on my iPad.
Draw a Candy Cane Base
Start with a circle shape. This will be the top of the candy cane. Duplicate the circle and select both to make a donut shape.
Now, I'll slice the donut shape in half by using a rectangle to divide it. I'll keep the inner semi circle shape for a later stage.
Next step is to make the stem of the candy cane. This can easily be done by using the rectangle function. Draw it out so that it's long and thin.
Remember how we kept the inner semi-circle shape. I'll use it here for the bottom of the candy cane.
Draw the Stripes
One thing I like about digital drawing is that you can use and reuse one part of the drawing more than once. This is a huge time saver.
This is how I'll make the stripes.
Go back and select the left-over semi-circle. Duplicate this part and color it white.
Place the duplicated semi-circle onto the candy cane base and pivot it on top to make the first stripe.
Once the first one is well-positioned, I can duplicate the stripe a few more times until the whole candy cane is full of stripes.
Finish the Candy Cane
Now that we have all the basic shapes, it's time to bring it all together.
Start by unifying all the sections of the candy cane base (the red sections). Then unify all the stripes (the white sections).
Duplicate the red base and the duplicate the unified white stripes.
Click Path and select Intersection. Change the color of the intersected pieces to white.
Delete the extra white layer of stripes.
Select the two paths (the red base and the stripes) and group them.
You can also leave the two paths ungrouped if you want to upload them as an svg to Cricut, Silhouette or any other cutting machine.
How to Add Custom Text to Your Drawing
To personalize your drawing, you can add a family name just under the candy cane. Here are three easy ways to add text to your drawing.

"A few months back, my mother-in-law let me borrow her Cricut when she saw me cutting by hand pages of (small) feathers, triangles and teepee's to make a garland for my daughter's "wild one" birthday party.
Prior to this, I had only admired projects that popped up on Pinterest and I had no idea how to use the machine, SVG was a brand new term. I now have a very long wish list of projects I dream of one day completing for my home, the kids & pets, and gifts for others.
Thank you for helping me expand my knowledge, skills, and overall creativity. "
